How the new process works

  • The University Libraries no longer issues daily fines for most overdue materials. Equipment and reserves do, however, still incur daily/hourly fines.
  • Instead, most items will have a grace period during which you can return material after its due date without any penalty. This does not apply to equipment or reserves. An item's grace period lasts from its due date until the end of the period listed in the 'Account Blocked' column above.
  • If you do not return an item by the end of the grace period, your account will be blocked and you will be unable to check out or renew materials, including the overdue item. At this point, you may still return the item without incurring any fee and your borrowing privileges will be reinstated.
  • If an item on your account is not returned before the end of the period listed in the 'Account Billed' column, the University Libraries will assume the material has been lost and we will bill your library account for the cost of the item, along with a $20 billing fee and $10 processing fee.
  • Finally, if you do not return an item earlier than the day listed in the 'Bill to the Bursar' column your library fines will be transferred to the Bursar's Office and applied to your University Account.
  • Any unpaid fees on your account will prevent you from checking out new materials or renewing current checkouts.

The intent of this fine policy is to prevent patrons from quickly incurring fees, while also encouraging them to promptly return materials so that other patrons can access them.

If you have questions regarding our overdue policy, please contact the Circulation Desk at crculate@vt.edu or 540-231-6340.

Paying Fines

All fine payments must be for the total amount owed. Any fines that have been sent to the Bursar's office must be settled with the Bursar's office. All other library fines must be paid to the library using Hokie Passport funds or a personal check or money order made payable to Treasurer of Virginia Tech (cash and debit/credit cards are not accepted) in one of the following ways:

  • Online using the Fine payment form,
  • In person at the Newman Services Desk, or
  • By mail by sending a check or money order to:

    Circulation Unit
    560 Drillfield Drive
    Blacksburg, VA 24061

Appealing Fines

Patrons can appeal fines on their account by completing a Fine appeal form. Forms can also be picked up and filled out at the Newman Services Desk on 2nd floor of Newman Library.

Fines cannot be contested once they are 60 days old or have gone to the Bursar's office.

To view your account, log into My Library Account.

Refunds

University Libraries will refund the replacement fee for items that you have paid for if you return them within 60 days of payment. You will still, however, have to pay a non-refundable billing fee.

If you return items that you have been billed for but have not paid for within 6 months, we will reduce your charges to the non-refundable billing fee. You will also be responsible for any financing charges incurred for fines that have been sent to the Bursar’s office.

All library patrons can request certain types of material owned by Virginia Tech University Libraries. These items can then be held at the Circulation Desk at Newman Library or the branch library of your choosing. Additionally, Faculty and staff with a campus address and/or department code can have books delivered through campus mail through the Faculty/Staff Campus Delivery program.

Extended Users (distance students, faculty, and staff) can request library materials through Interlibrary Loan using ILLiad.

Requestable Items:

  • Books, serials, scripts, juvenile books, and any book that is in the University Libraries’ regular collection.
  • CDs, VHSs, and 16mm film can also be held at Newman Library or any branch library but they cannot be delivered through Faculty/Staff Campus Delivery.
  • Faculty, Staff and Graduate student instructors can also book DVDs and other media material in advance by submitting a Media Booking form. Media Booking requests are only processed Tuesday-Saturday and will usually be completed within 3 days.

Non-Requestable Items:

  • Books on display, DVDs, reserve materials, and unbound journals and magazines are not eligible for this service; you will still need to retrieve these items in person.

Requesting Items:

  • Find an item you'd like to request in Addison.
  • Click on the green Request icon.
  • Use the "Pickup Location" drop-down menu to select the location you would like your items sent to.

After You Submit Your Request:

  • Most items reach their destination within 2 to 5 days. However, material traveling between Blacksburg and Northern Virginia Resource Center will take 7 to 10 days.
  • If you request an item for pickup at Newman Library or a branch library, you will receive an e-mail notification when the item reaches its destination. Faculty and Staff taking advantage of the Campus Delivery Program will receive an email stating that the item has been checked out to their account just before we mail it.
  • If your items do not arrive within a week, please contact the Newman Services Desk at crculate@vt.edu.

If we don't have a resource you need, we'll request it from another library for you. We borrow from a wide range of universities and research institutions within and outside the United States.

For more information, please see our Interlibrary Loan guide.

Submit a request using ILLiad.
