The Mapping the Fourth of July exhibit is open through July 31
Now through July 31, visit the second floor of Newman Library and enjoy the newest exhibit, Mapping the Fourth of July.
Mapping the Fourth of July is a website that allows anyone to explore the fascinating history of the American Civil War. Users can read, transcribe, and analyze actual Civil War era documents to help us better understand the different celebrations and the variety of attitudes toward Independence Day among the generations who lived through America’s greatest conflict.
The website features thousands of workable documents including newspaper articles, speeches, handwritten letters, and diaries. Each one tells a different story about what being American meant during the Civil War years.
This exhibit showcases a small selection of the documents. Explore countless other July 4 stories at the workstation, where you can try your hand at transcribing, tagging, and connecting documents.
