Newman Library offers multiple classrooms and event spaces for use by groups associated with Virginia Tech. Our spaces have flexible furniture layouts and ample technology for use by patrons.

The  Lury and Barbara Goodall Room (Room 101)

  • Location: First floor of Newman Library, up the ramp past the cafe
  • Capacity: 75

Newman 101S Classroom

  • Location: First floor of Newman Library, past the Goodall Room and near the restroom
  • Capacity: 72

Newman 207A Classroom

  • Location: Second floor of Newman Library, past the Media Recording Studio and Popular Reading Collection
  • Capacity: 50

Torgersen 3310 Classroom

  • Location: Fourth floor of Newman Library, pasted the Gaming Studio on Torgersen Bridge
  • Capacity: 25

Our spaces can be reserved by visiting our bookings page at bookings.lib.vt.edu. Please review the usage policies before booking a space. To find out more information about the technology and other resources available in each of our specific spaces, click on the spaces listed below.

Please note, patrons will be required to complete a brief University Libraries Classroom & Event Spaces Training and have a current badge in order to book these spaces starting January 2025. You are encouraged to sign up for the Canvas course and review the relevant module(s) before your booking.

The University Libraries’ Academic & Creative Engagement (ACE) instruction and event spaces are technology-rich and available for library-related instruction and other teaching, meeting, training, or presentation requests submitted by persons/groups affiliated with Virginia Tech. 

Use Policies

  • Classrooms and event spaces are available only during Newman Library building hours (vary by semester) and are routinely supported during normal business hours (9am - 5pm). Those holding after-hours events should make arrangements for additional training before their event.
  • Orientation to AV equipment is available to patrons in advance of their scheduled booking, and it is recommended that this session be confirmed at least two weeks before the event.You can request a Library Classroom A/V Consultation by following the link provided to 4Help. Please contact the ACE Space Support Staff at library-classrooms-g@vt.edu for more information.
  • Spaces are reserved for patrons only during their confirmed booking. Any set up or tear down time should be included in the booking request.
  • Your confirmed booking gives you access and permission to use the inside of the space you’ve booked. If you need to set up anything outside the classroom or event space, you will need to contact ACE Space Support Staff at library-classrooms-g@vt.edu at least 10 business days prior to your booking so that they can coordinate with Newman Library Building Management to consider your request.
  • Classroom spaces in Newman Library have some laptop computers available. If any additional software may be needed for your booking, you will need to contact ACE Space Support Staff at library-classrooms-g@vt.edu at least 10 business days prior to your booking so that they can coordinate with University Libraries IT Services to consider your request.
  • Patrons are responsible for the cleanliness and order of the space following their booking, and the University Libraries is not responsible for left or unattended items. Leaving spaces messy or damaging furniture or equipment may result in suspension of booking privileges.
  • Patrons are required to adhere to the Virginia Tech Principles of Community while requesting and using University Libraries spaces. Failure to do so may result in suspension of booking privileges for no less than one (1) semester. Repeat offenders will be disallowed from booking spaces in the future.

Scheduling Policies

  • Booking requests will be considered on a case-by-case basis; however, general restrictions include:
    • Use of classroom by student groups or undergraduates, unaccompanied by a faculty member or graduate teaching assistant.
    • More than 3 non-library related classroom bookings in one semester.
    • Use of classrooms by non-University groups without library collaboration.
  • Reservations for University Libraries learning and event spaces are made by completing the request form located at bookings.lib.vt.edu. Requests will be confirmed via email.
    • If you need to book an instruction session with University Libraries employees, you will need to reach out to them. You can find more information on our Instruction & Workshops page.
  • To ensure spaces are available for use, a two-day cancellation notice is requested; contact library-classrooms-g@vt.edu.
  • Events are booked in the smallest space that can comfortably accommodate the event to allow for better coverage of larger requests.
  • Library learning and event spaces are only reserved for semester-long courses through a central review process prior to each semester. Contact the ACE Space Support Staff at library-classrooms-g@vt.edu for more information.

Please note: The periods from late January to mid-April and late August to late October are especially busy times for library instruction. University Libraries instruction will be prioritized during these periods.

Additionally, violation or bypassing of any of these policies may result in suspension of booking privileges for no less than one (1) semester.

The Lury and Barbara Goodall Room, formerly the Multipurpose Room, is Newman Library's flexible space designed to accommodate a wide range of public events and activities, from film screenings and lectures, to receptions and exhibits. Our intention is to showcase programs that highlight learning, research, culture, and creativity. Virginia Tech faculty, staff, and officially recognized student groups may request the room for public events and programs.

    • 1 Wireless lapel microphones
    • 6 Wireless tabletop puck microphones
  • Assisted listening devices - We are proud to announce that in our bid to make our space more inclusive and accessible, the MPR is now equipped with assisted listening devices. These devices can be paired with your hearing aid or your can simply plug in your headphones (must have 3.5mm audio jack end) for a better listening experience!
  • Laptops available upon request

Newman 101S is the library's largest collaboration classroom, with whiteboards on every wall, flexible student seating, and multiple large presentation screens. This classroom is primarily reserved for library workshops and some semester-long courses during weekdays. Library classrooms are reservable by instructors and University faculty and staff.

Newman 207A is a flexible classroom designed for both lecture-based and group-activity instruction. This classroom is typically reserved during the regular semester for classes, workshops, and events. Library classrooms are reservable by instructors and University faculty and staff.

Torgersen 3310 is a smaller flex-classroom located on the Torgersen Bridge that features movable tables and seating and multiple screens. Library classrooms are reservable by instructors and University faculty and staff.

The University Libraries partnered with the Institute for Creativity, Arts, and Technology (ICAT) to build and house three multimedia studios, which support academic activities.

The classrooms are located on the first floor of Newman Library.
