Resident Librarian Program

The Virginia Tech University Libraries launched its first residency program in 2017. After a brief hiatus, the program was reimagined and relaunched in 2023 with a renewed commitment to intentional support, professional growth, and long-term career development for early career librarians.

Our residency program is built around a multi-tiered support system that includes internal mentors, designated supervisors, program coordinators, and external connections with library professionals across the academic library landscape. Drawing from Residencies Revisited: Reflections on Library Residency Programs From the Past and Present, feedback from past and current residents, and a review of residency models across the profession, we developed a structure designed to promote accountability, sustainability, flexibility, and meaningful support.

What makes our residency program stand out is our focus on connection, intentional professional development, and consistent individualized support. Through monthly check-ins, mentorship, and structured reflection, residents are supported in shaping a more personal and purposeful learning experience during a critical stage of their early careers.

In addition to traditional rotations, residents receive one-on-one support, access to workshops focused on early career development, and opportunities to strengthen skills in areas such as CV writing, interviewing, leadership, project management, and more. The program also provides funding to support professional development through conferences, certification programs, and other learning opportunities.

We take a holistic approach to the residency experience. Our goal is not only to support residents as they grow professionally, but also to create an environment where they feel connected, supported, and encouraged as whole person.
