What is the Skills Showcase?
The Skills Showcase is an event that celebrates students who make art using resources from the University Libraries at Virginia Tech including library spaces, technology, expertise, and more. Students can enter their work to be displayed at Newman Library and for the chance to win prizes.
What can I win?
You could win a $60 prize from a local business including New River Art & fiber or Blacksburg Books!
FAQ
Undergraduate and graduate students are eligible to enter and win prizes. Faculty and Staff are eligble to enter, but not to win prizes.
Students can enter 3D prints, songs, short films, laser cut art, VR or AR experience, poetry, photography, painting, graphic design, and more! If you have an idea that's not listed, enter it! We love to see new things. Entries should be created in the 2023-24 school year.
First, complete this submission form by April 17. Participants can enter up to two items in the showcase. Physical items need to be dropped off at the Prototyping Studio in Newman Library by April 17. Digital items should be submitted to librarystudios@vt.edu by April 17. Participants can take home their art after the event on April 23.
You can receive an extra entry in the showcase by submitting a portfolio or documentation about the creation of your work to librarystudios@vt.edu by April 17. To learn more about portfolios, visit lib.vt.edu/create-share/ePortfolios.
All participants are entered into a raffle to win one of four prizes. Winners will receive baskets with items from local businesses including Blacksburg Books and New River Art and Fiber. If the project is made from upcycled materials, partcipants can be entered to win an prize in an additional drawing. Participants can submit two entires. Additional entries can be earned by submitting a portfolio and using upcycled materials. One prize basket per winner. Raffle winners will choose prizes based on the order they are called.
The Skills Showcase event will be held on April 22nd 1:30pm-4:00pm at Newman Library on the 2nd Floor. Art will be displayed around the 2nd Floor Commons. The event also includes free food. All participants are invited to attend and bring guests!
